On 24 June 1978 saw Sydney’s first Mardi Gras when more than 500 people gathered to march down Oxford Street in commemoration of the Stonewall riots, calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality, which was still illegal in NSW. Police broke up the march and arrested 53 people. Those first protesters came to be known as the ‘78ers’

WorldPride, licensed by InterPride and organized by one of its member organizations, is an event that promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ pride) issues on an international level through parades, and festivals and other cultural activities. The inaugural WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000. In 2023 Sydney will be hosting world pride and events are already being planned for the big celebration next year!
