Sex Radical is a project developed by Jacqui North, who received funds from Lesbians Incorporated in round two 2023 to got towards the production of this project. Dykes led an explosion of kinky sex-positive fun on Gadigal land from the late 1980s into the 2000s in Sydney.
Using her own photographs and archives, director/producer Jacqui North brings to life women’s stories of wild freedom, ethical polyamory, and deep connections. This short deeply collaborative consensual 10-minute documentary celebrates untamed women’s sexuality from the perspective of women aged 50+.
This project celebrates women’s sexuality particularly older and queer/dyke/women of colour/Aboriginal/bi-sexual/non-binary/ trans women’s sexuality is hidden, shamed and erased from history.
The short documentary provides insight and evidence of the rebellious sex-positive dyke era of the 1980s through to 2000. It was a profoundly DIY dyke aesthetic throwing off capitalism and male ownership of female-identified bodies.
